Washington, D.C. — Americans for Fair Treatment (AFFT) today applauded Iowa Governor Kim Reynolds for signing SF 472 into law, legislation championed by State Senator Adrian Dickey that strengthens accountability and transparency in public-sector union representation.
SF 472 updates Iowa’s process for retention and recertification elections for public employee collective bargaining units, ensuring that unions must periodically demonstrate that they still have the support of the workers they claim to represent.
The new law reinforces the principle that union representation should be based on ongoing worker support, not automatic continuation.
“A union should only represent workers if workers actually want that representation,” said Chip Rogers, CEO of Americans for Fair Treatment. “By signing SF 472, Governor Reynolds and Senator Dickey have taken an important step toward ensuring that public employees have a real voice in deciding who speaks for them in the workplace.”
Senator Dickey recently joined AFFT CEO Chip Rogers and Senior Advisor Corey DeAngelis for a conversation on the AFFT Red Pen Podcast, where he discussed the importance of protecting workers’ freedom and strengthening accountability in union representation.

AFFT works nationwide to educate workers about their constitutional rights, including the freedom to choose whether to join or financially support a union.
“With this legislation, Iowa continues to lead the country in protecting worker freedom and ensuring that unions remain accountable to the employees they represent,” Rogers said.
