Tragedy tests true values. And the Massachusetts Teachers Association failed spectacularly, by shielding hate speech instead of unequivocally denouncing the assassination of Charlie Kirk.
MTA leaders skipped calls for unity, compassion, or rejection of political murder. They smeared Kirk’s grieving supporters as “exploiters” and warned schools against “validating accusations” against educators, even for the most inflammatory online comments that incite hatred and violence.
That response reveals misplaced priorities. Rather than confronting the reality that some educators may engage in harmful conduct, the union’s instinct is to shield them from scrutiny. They value cover-ups more than lives and parents and communities deserve better.
We saw this same pattern just days ago in Virginia. Now Massachusetts is following suit. Time and again, union leaders reveal that protecting their members from accountability matters more to them than upholding the standards of the teaching profession.
At AFFT, we believe educators should be role models both inside and outside the classroom. We will continue shining a light on these double standards and working to restore professionalism and trust in public education. Families deserve nothing less.
