Americans for Fair Treatment Applauds VA Decision to End Outdated Union Contracts

Washington, D.C. – Americans for Fair Treatment (AFFT) today praised Secretary of Veterans Affairs Doug Collins for terminating outdated union contracts that have long burdened both employees and the veterans they serve.

“Secretary Collins’ decisive action to terminate outdated union contracts at the VA is a game-changer for both veterans and employees. By halting automatic union dues deductions, hardworking VA staff can finally keep more of their earned wages, free from compulsory payments that often fund radical political agendas,” said Chip Rogers, CEO of Americans for Fair Treatment.

The reform also ends the misuse of taxpayer-funded “official time” for union business, returning valuable hours to the mission of veteran care.

“This reform dismantles the staggering waste of over 750,000 hours of taxpayer-funded ‘official time’ on union activities, redirecting those resources to what matters most: delivering top-tier care to our nation’s veterans. It’s a victory for efficiency and accountability in public service,” Rogers continued.

AFFT noted that the decision will strengthen merit-based management at the VA.

“Ending these burdensome union pacts empowers VA managers to reward excellence and remove underperformers, creating a truly merit-based workplace. Employees benefit from higher take-home pay, while veterans receive the faster, more effective support they deserve—proving that freeing workers from union grip strengthens everyone involved,” Rogers said.
