Top union leaders attacked President Donald Trump and expressed their support for Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden and his running mate Kamala Harris at the Democratic National Convention’s Labor Council meeting on Monday.
Speakers at the virtual meeting included DNC Chair Tom Perez, Minnesota Senator Amy Klobuchar, and Richard Trumka, president of the AFL-CIO, which has endorsed Biden.
In his prepared remarks, Trumka attacked President Trump’s response to the COVID-19 crisis, and for recent changes to the postal service. He said the election was a “choice between more division and decline or rebuilding and reviving the country we love. A country built by unions. A country run by unions.”
Members of the council expressed their support for the $3 trillion pandemic relief bill passed by the House of Representatives, as well as the union-backed PRO Act, which was passed by the House in February.
Among other provisions, the PRO Act supersede “Right to Work” laws in all 50 states by requiring workers to pay their “fair share” if their workplace is unionized.
